MARKET NEWS UPDATE BY FORTUNE

U.S. stocks were mixed, with the S&P 500 Index on track for a fifth monthly gain, as investors waited on developments from Nafta talks. Emerging-market shares took another hit, while the dollar climbed with Treasuries. American equities showed little life ahead of a holiday weekend. Volume in the S&P 500 was about 25% below average.
