Emirates could overtake American Airlines, Delta and United to become the world’s biggest airline by passenger numbers if it succeeds in a potential bid to acquire its unprofitable neighbor.
Dubai’s flagship carrier is in preliminary talks to take over Abu Dhabi’s Etihad, according to our sources, who added that the negotiations could still fall through.
Both airlines initially declined to comment, before later denying that any talks were underway.
Any deal would require the blessing of the rulers of the richest sheikhdoms in the United Arab Emirates.
